Any Sandwich Artist worth their smoked gourmet salt knows that the precise layering of ingredients is as essential to a sandwich as the ingredients themselves. As I continue my Quest for Greatness in Tuna Salads purchased at large or created in the privacy of my home, I pause for the 1st tuna sam of the new year. Lately I've been satisfied by mayo, salt and pepper, but today I felt the calling for the addition of slivers of bread & butter pickle chips next to the bread, and shreds of carrot in between the tuna and the lettuce.

A hidden key "ingredient" is temperature. I keep my tuna cans in the fridge, but "cold" is not always the best temp for either texture or flavor. Somewhere between "chilled" and "room" is a fickle, yet savory spot that I consider when TunaQuesting.

Yes, I have been known to eat a freshly prepared tuna salad sandwich for breakfast, sitting at the computer while planning the day's adventures. Today's line-up includes the current faves: shredded carrots, and sliced green olives. The otherwise default ingredients are mayo, salt and pepper.

As a tuna enthusiast, I find it a worthy pursuit to analyze and upgrade my tuna experiences as I go along my merry way. I mean, the whole experience is kind of self selecting in the first place as there aren't too many people who share my questing interests. I figure I may as well take the time to reflect and enjoy more deeply.

In high school I ate the tuna sandwich every day as I found myself powerless to choose anything else in the lunch line moment- it was plain old salt, pepper and mayo tuna on a kaiser roll with a little piece of iceberg lettuce. The textures and flavors blended perfectly, and washed down with a chocolate milk, I was fully satisfied. Every day. I pondered the predictability at the time, but gave in to the higher taste powers. Every day.

Tuna salad sandwiches are not improved by a Dutch Crunch roll, a torpedo roll, or a bunch of stuff piled too high. It seems like it would be an improvement, but actually the extra ingredients are best served as a tossed salad with some bread on the side.
The Nicoise Salad is the Prima Donna of tuna salads, and ought to be toppled by newer more creative tuna inventions.

When I was a kid, my mom used to make tuna salad in different ways acccording to her whim. One of my all-time favorites was when she put a little sugar and white vinegar into the mix in addition to the mayo, salt and pepper. yum!

I'm looking for the word that describes a sandwich maker, in the same spirit that the English use of the Italian word Barista describes one who prepares espresso coffee drinks with a degree of expertise. Can anyone help me out here?

Due to high demands on Tuna Questors time, the Quest hereby goes Virtual. Soon we'll be co-knoshing our favorite fetish food: Ye Fanciful Tuna Salade. I have a can in my fridge and will be getting to it this week. Let's skip the mercury charts for now, and forge ahead with tuna sightings, the good, the bad and the awesome.
